Top Livable Cities in Metro Manila

Okay, first off, this is not a thorough survey, simply based on superficial personal observation of mine.

Basically, judging each city’s cleanliness, safety and economics. Some might argue with me, but no city is perfect.

Makati City. Everywhere I go, the roads are concreted. Even in areas which can be considered a slum, is generally clean.

For college graduates, it is a buffet of possible jobs to work for. Even laborers, food servers, and store clerks can find jobs here, there are constant construction of corporate buildings, and new businesses sprouting everywhere.

There are still affordable houses or rooms to rent, just go farther away from the Makati Business Disctrict.

Marikina City. The Ondoy storm that ravaged the part of this city could have changed their image as a livable city. But I would still recommend this city to anyone wanting to live in Metro Manila. Just avoid Providence Village, the place most devastated by the 2009 strongest typhoon.

The mayor here is strict about cleanliness and aesthetics. Although, it does not have a large business center such as Makati’s Ayala and Pasig’s Ortigas Center.

Pasig City. I would recommend this Eusebio managed city for working professionals, but not for families especially with kids.

There had been several shabu colonies that were raided by the police. Including one, just meters away from the City Hall, and reportedly raided three times in three years.

Pasig City belongs to the top five earning cities in the Philippines. I believe the Ortigas Center, the city’s premier business district is one big source of the income.

GwapoTel, the Cheapest Hotel in Manila?

If you’re on a tight budget, and don’t mind privacy, then Gwapotel is for you.

For 25 pesos per 10 hours, you can have your own sleeping space. The 5 pesos is actually a fee for a shower.

Gwapotel is popular among backpackers, laborers or workers who lived very far from Metro Manila.

Gwapotel is not just the cheapest temporary accommodation in Manila, but the whole of the Philippines.

There are two Gwapotels: First one is in Bonifacio Drive, Port Area, Manila. The second is in Tondo, Manila. But the Tondo branch is facing closure because of the lack of occupants.

Gwapotel’s telephone numbers:
882-4151 to 77 loc. 317 and look for Mr. Amante Salvador.

Click here for the location map of the first Gwapotel.

Quezon City Squatters Demolition

Quezon City maybe one of Metro Manila’s most progressive cities, but it’s not vulnerable of illegal squatters occupying government owned lots. Even some privately owned lots are not spared.

The recent demolition of shanties in Sitio San Roque, Barangay Bagong Pag-asa in Quezon City spurred riots started by the illegal dwellers. The settlers opposed of resettling to a resettlement site in Rodriguez, Rizal, which according to them has a lot of disadvantages.

The disputed lot will turn by the City Government in partnership with a private company into a Business District.

See the Quezon City map.

Caloocan City is one of the progressive cities in Metro Manila. Although, I’ve on this city only once when I and my football buddies had a party at a friend’s house.

Manila During the Spanish Time

I stumbled upon a blog article owned by a former colleague of mine. In it, he posted videos of old Manila during the Spanish colonial time.

The video is a documentary about Manila, obviously produced by the Americans, most likely in the early part of the 1900s.

Worth your time watching and reminiscing the old Manila.

Death at Milo Marathon

Somebody died in the 34th Milo Marathon held last July 4, 2010. For some reason, there was not any news about the man’s death in the leading news agencies such as Manila Bulletin, Inquirer or Philippine star.

A 37 year old man named Remus Fuentes died of multiple organ failure as a consequence of the heatstroke he suffered about 40 hours earlier.

A detailed account from the father of Remus can be found at PinoyFitness.

I’m copying the entry just in case the link above is off:

Slum Area in Ortigas Burned

This slum or popularly called squatters’ area is located in Barangay San Antonio in Pasig City. I believe it’s still part of Ortigas Center. The street is part of UA & P or University of Asia and the Pacific.

One day last year 2009 while walking to work, I saw this sight. Good thing i’ve had my Nikon D40 at that time.

Ortigas Center Pasig City Manila
There used to be sidewalk eateries in this area, catering to mostly construction employees.

Honestly, i was secretly delighted when the place got burned. I don’t like squatters.

But the following week, the settlers slowly rebuilt their homes.

See the map below to know its location: It’s in Escriva Drive.
